PROJECT SUMMARY

Jeffrey Bowlby: Nutrient Management and Improved Seeding

SITE SUMMARY

OPERATION TYPE

Cropland

SITE FOCUS

Nutrient Management, Equipment

SITE RESOURCE CONCERN

1. Currently fertilizer is applied on the surface, increasing the risk for nutrient loss. 2. Current sprayer shutoffs result in overlap of sprayed surfaces and increased inputs. 3. Current vertical tillage machine leads to slow cover cropping and delayed times in planting, causing uneven stands.

SOLUTION

1. Equipment for subsurface banding of fertilizer will lead to reduced fertilizer inputs and risk of nutrient losses. 2. GPS controlled shut offs on the sprayer will reduce overlap and the amount of inputs needed. 3. Equipment for air seeding on the vertical tillage machine will increase cover cropping efficiency and allow the operator to plant cover crop when it needs to be in the ground, leading to improved cover crop stands.

PLANNED BMPS

Nutrient management, Reduced chemical inputs, Cover Cropping
